Project Objective:

Along the value chains of bio-based foods and plant extracts, AlpBioEco evaluates the bioeconomic potential of walnuts, apples, and herbs. Using open innovation concepts, the project identifies and develops eco-innovations in the bio-based economy. The communication strategy raises awareness of business opportunities in the bioeconomy within the Alpine region.

Background:

The ecosystems of the Alpine region are exposed to environmental problems linked to economic activities and climate change. Furthermore, Alpine farms, as well as craft and processing businesses, face intense competition due to globalization. The expansion of the bioeconomy represents enormous potential for green growth and employment. Since the value chains of the participating Alpine stakeholders are insufficiently interconnected, this potential is not yet being fully realized. There is also a lack of coherent policies and strategies that promote the potential of bio-based value chains. AlpBioEco contributes to the integrated territorial development of the agricultural sector and promotes innovation for small and medium-sized enterprises, leading to greater cohesion in the Alpine region.

Highlights:

  • Analysis of the current state of value chains for apples, walnuts, and herbs in the Alpine region
  • Development of eco-innovative business models
  • Conducting pilot tests of the business models
  • Developing guidelines based on the information and insights gained from the previously developed and validated new business models
