Key topics

We connect healthcare facilities, educational institutions, research institutions, medical technology companies, suppliers and consultants for an innovative and competitive healthcare industry in (Upper) Austria. Based on the central topic of medical engineering, the cluster focuses its activities on digital health and medical materials. We also provide information on Regulatory Affairs, Care Technologies and carry out the MedTech Incubator and the Smart MedTech Check.

Medical engineering is an interdisciplinary area of research and work at the interface between engineering and natural sciences as well as medicine. The aim is to develop and design new devices, devices, implants and technologies for medical and clinical applications.
Medical engineering includes:

  • robotics, minimally invasive surgery
  • electromedicine, biomedical measurement technology, monitoring
  • Biomechanics, development of prosthetics (endoskeletons and exoskeletons)
  • medical mechatronics
  • Microsensors and microfluidics
  • Molecular Biology, Cellular & Tissue Engineering
  • Approval of medical devices, regulatory affairs

Digital technologies are driving the future market for medical technology. By bundling core IT competencies and transferring knowledge to medical technology, new products, projects, services and business models are created.

Together with companies and research and healthcare institutions, we are focusing more on digitization in medical technology. Our cooperation projects and initiatives create awareness of the topic of “digital health” and strengthen Upper Austria as a location for medical technology.

The wide range of medical devices requires an equally wide variety of materials. Depending on the application, they must have different properties in terms of hardness, flexibility, surface quality, etc. and absolute biocompatibility. In addition, hygiene, cleaning and disinfection are essential in clinical settings and the functionality of the products must therefore be guaranteed despite frequent cleaning and sterilization cycles. The universally applicable material for medical technology therefore does not exist.

The Medical Technology Cluster creates the platform for new ideas and opportunities to find suitable partners and framework conditions for their implementation.

The EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) is drastic cuts for the medical technology sector. With events and information, the MTC creates more awareness of the topic in the industry. It also acts as a central point of contact for all questions relating to regulatory affairs (clinical studies, approval and certification of medical devices, etc.) Interested people to the right contacts in the network.

The increasingly aging society and the increasing need for home and inpatient care are driving the demand for innovative, intelligent medical technology solutions. For the medical technology sector, the care sector therefore offers enormous potential for growth and development of new, specialized products such as devices for monitoring vital signs, mobile diagnostic technology, mobility and storage tools, and wound care systems.

In cooperation with tech2b, we offer an industry-specific start-up program for medtech start-ups and spin-offs. The MedTech incubator combines the know-how that two institutions in Upper Austria have built up since 2002: expertise in start-up consulting at tech2b and specialist expertise and industry network in medical technology at MTC.

The industry-specific start-up program supports medtech start-ups in implementing their idea, developing a regulatory strategy and a tailored business concept, and applying for further funding.
